Myanmar's Military Parades Amid Unprecedented Battlefield Losses
Bangkok, Mar 27 AP - In a significant address during Myanmar's Armed Forces Day, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of the country's ruling military council, delivered a speech in Naypyitaw, the capital. This event showcased a massive military parade, symbolizing strength amidst ongoing conflicts. The general accused the nation's youth of being misled into supporting resistance movements against army governance. He also alleged that ethnic armed factions allied with these resistance groups are involved in illicit activities such as drug trafficking, smuggling of natural resources, and illegal gambling operations.

During his speech, Min Aung Hlaing reiterated calls for the international community to withdraw support for these resistance forces. He blamed them for disrupting the process towards conducting elections, which he previously mentioned in an interview with Russia's ITAR-TASS news agency could occur in peaceful and stable parts of Myanmar. This statement comes against the backdrop of widespread international sanctions imposed on Myanmar's military leaders following their forceful takeover in 2021 and the subsequent harsh crackdown on dissent.
The United Nations reports that military offensives since the coup have led to over 2 million people being displaced. Min Aung Hlaing expressed concern over young individuals being exploited by insurgents, driven by what he termed as "false narrative propaganda." He criticized certain ethnic armed groups for undermining efforts to establish a union founded on democratic principles and federalism.
The military's takeover in 2021 ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, alleging electoral fraud—a claim contested by independent observers. The suppression of protests ignited nationwide armed resistance, with thousands of youths joining ethnic guerrilla forces in remote areas to fight for autonomy.
Recent months have seen Min Aung Hlaing's forces suffer significant losses in various regions, including northern Shan state and Rakhine state. These setbacks have led to a decline in morale and prompted the activation of a conscription law to bolster military ranks. Both the army and some ethnic minority groups have faced accusations related to illegal drug production and protection rackets around casino complexes involved in online scams.
For the first time since Naypyitaw became the capital in 2006, this year's 79th Armed Forces Day parade was conducted during sunset hours, a change attributed to unusually hot weather conditions caused by the El Niño phenomenon. The day commemorates the Myanmar army's initiation of combat against Japanese forces in 1945.
Statements from the British and Canadian embassies on Armed Forces Day highlighted concerns over civilian attacks by the military, including airstrikes targeting homes, schools, healthcare facilities, and places of worship. Canada specifically called for an immediate halt to the sale or transfer of arms and military assistance to Myanmar.
