Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Clash Over Trump-Supported Stargate AI Data Centre Project

Elon Musk and Sam Altman are at odds over the Stargate AI project, which US President Donald Trump recently praised. This project, a collaboration between OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, aims to invest up to USD 500 billion in AI infrastructure. Trump highlighted this as a testament to America's potential, with an initial USD 100 billion investment. However, Musk questioned the financial backing of the venture.

Musk and Altman Clash Over Stargate AI Project

Altman countered Musk's scepticism by inviting him to visit the Texas site under construction. "This is great for the country," Altman stated, urging Musk to prioritise national interests over personal business gains. The disagreement between Musk and Altman stems from a long-standing rivalry that began with OpenAI's leadership decisions.

Background of the Dispute

Musk, an early investor in OpenAI, has been in conflict with Altman over its direction. He sued OpenAI last year, claiming it strayed from its nonprofit mission. Musk seeks a court order to halt OpenAI's transition to a for-profit entity. A hearing is scheduled for February in California. Meanwhile, Musk launched his own AI company, xAI, which he claims faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its partner Microsoft.

Stargate Project Details

The Stargate project was first reported by The Information in March 2024. It involves building data centres powered by renewable energy sources like solar farms. Crusoe Energy Systems and Lancium are developing a facility outside Abilene, Texas. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison mentioned plans for about 10 data centres, potentially expanding to 20.

Microsoft was notably absent from Trump's announcement despite its significant investments in OpenAI. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella confirmed their involvement in Stargate but emphasised their USD 80 billion global AI infrastructure plan. "Look, all I know is, I'm good for my USD 80 billion," Nadella remarked during an interview.

The ongoing feud between Musk and Altman highlights differing visions for AI development and its impact on national interests. As these tech giants continue to clash, the future of AI infrastructure remains a topic of intense debate and scrutiny.
