Minnesota Resident Dies from Rabies After Contact with Bat: A Rare Case

A Minnesota resident has died from rabies after encountering a bat in July, as reported by the state's health department. This incident is unusual since fewer than 10 people in the US succumb to rabies annually, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The individual, over 65 years old, had contact with a bat in western Minnesota.

Rare Rabies Death Reported in Minnesota

CDC officials confirmed the rabies diagnosis on September 20 at their Atlanta laboratory. The state health department is investigating if others were exposed but assured there is no ongoing public risk. They urged people to avoid bats, as their bites can be hard to detect due to their tiny teeth.

Rabies Prevention and Treatment

Rabies, a virus affecting the central nervous system, is typically fatal in both animals and humans if untreated. However, treatment is highly effective if administered before symptoms appear. State health officials emphasised the importance of starting treatment promptly after exposure.

Dr. Stacy Holzbauer, a public health veterinarian, recommended immunising pets and livestock against rabies. This precaution helps prevent potential transmission from animals to humans.

Decline in Rabies-Related Deaths

The number of human deaths from rabies in the US has significantly decreased from over 100 annually in the early 1900s to fewer than five cases each year recently. Approximately 70% of infections acquired domestically are linked to bat encounters.

The health department's findings highlight the importance of awareness and preventive measures against rabies. Ensuring pets are vaccinated and avoiding contact with wild animals can reduce the risk of exposure.
