20 Years for Minnesota Man After Fatal Stabbing of Teen on Wisconsin River
A Minnesota man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of a high school student and the stabbing of four others on a western Wisconsin river. Nicolae Miu, 54, will also serve six years of extended supervision after his release. The incident occurred in July 2022 along the Apple River in St. Croix County, near the Wisconsin-Minnesota border.

Miu, from Prior Lake, Minnesota, was convicted in April of first-degree reckless homicide, four counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and one count of battery. Prosecutors had sought a 70-year prison term for Miu, whose attack killed 17-year-old Isaac Schuman from Stillwater, Minnesota, and injured four others.
Details of the Incident
The stabbings happened while Miu and the victims were tubing in separate groups on the Apple River. According to investigators, Miu attacked after being accused of approaching children in the water. He claimed he was using a snorkel and goggles to search for a lost cellphone and felt threatened, leading him to act in self-defence.
St. Croix County District Judge R. Michael Waterman noted that two victims would have died without immediate assistance from other tubers and emergency responders. "All survivors suffered permanent disfigurement," he said. The judge added that Miu "made a series of very poor decisions" after being confronted with taunts and insults.
Legal Proceedings
Miu's attorney, Aaron Nelson, requested a "measured response" from the court during sentencing. He acknowledged the "heartbreaking loss" experienced by Schuman's family and other victims. Despite this plea, Judge Waterman highlighted Miu's actions post-attack: "He fled the scene, leaving his victims to die while casually floating by them and emergency workers as if nothing had happened."
After the attack, Miu was arrested while attempting to leave the scene in his car. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that court documents revealed Miu began stabbing people after being taunted by Schuman and his friends.
The judge emphasised that Miu's actions were not justified by the verbal confrontation he faced. "He fled the scene, leaving his victims to die while casually floating by them and emergency workers as if nothing had happened," Judge Waterman stated.
This case has drawn significant attention due to its violent nature and the young age of the primary victim. The sentencing aims to provide some measure of justice for the families affected by this tragic event.
