Out-of-State Police Fatally Shoot Man Near RNC, Angering Milwaukee Locals
Ohio police officers in Wisconsin for the Republican National Convention shot and killed a Milwaukee man on Tuesday. This incident has sparked anger among residents who questioned the presence of out-of-state officers in their neighbourhood, which is about a mile from the convention site.

The Columbus Police Department confirmed that their officers were involved in the shooting. Thousands of officers from various jurisdictions are in Milwaukee to provide additional security for the convention, which began on Monday and concludes on Thursday.
Community Outrage Over Shooting
Milwaukee residents and activists quickly gathered at the scene of the shooting, expressing outrage over the involvement of out-of-state police. Dozens of officers stood behind police tape, refusing to answer questions about the incident.
"They came into our community and shot down our family right here at a public park," said Linda Sharpe, a cousin of the deceased. "What are you doing in our city, shooting people down?"
Linda Sharpe identified her cousin as Samuel Sharpe, who lived in a tent encampment across from King Park, where the shooting occurred. Residents said Samuel was well-known among locals and others living near the encampment.
Questions About Jurisdiction
Kenneth Johnson, a volunteer with Friends Without Shelter, often delivered food to Samuel and others in the tents. He questioned why an out-of-state officer was at that location. "They shouldn't have jurisdiction to be in this area. This isn't near where the zones are," Johnson said. "These are tent communities over here; they shouldn't be over here."
The Columbus Police Department stated that the shooting occurred "within the operational zone to which our officers were assigned." The department has received attention for its special unit deployed to Milwaukee, aimed at improving police-community relationships.
Details of the Incident
The shooting took place near King Park, roughly a mile from the convention centre. A small group of protesters had gathered there before marching on Monday. Columbus police officers, wearing blue vests that read: "Columbus Police Dialogue," followed this demonstration.
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that an adult male was shot and killed. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday. The Milwaukee Police Department did not respond to an email seeking more details about Tuesday's shooting.
The Columbus Police Department, Milwaukee's mayor's chief of staff, and a spokeswoman for the convention's joint command centre all stated there was no indication that the shooting was related to the convention itself.
The incident has raised significant concerns among Milwaukee residents about the presence and actions of out-of-state law enforcement in their community during such events.
