Mexican Army Troops Open Fire, Resulting in Deaths of Six Migrants Near Guatemalan Border

Mexican army troops recently fired on a truck carrying migrants from various countries, resulting in the deaths of six individuals from Egypt, Peru, and El Salvador. President Claudia Sheinbaum described the incident as "deplorable." Ten other migrants sustained injuries during the shooting. The exact number of casualties from each country remains undisclosed, and Mexico's foreign relations department has not provided further details.

Six Migrants Killed by Mexican Army Fire

The shooting took place near Huixtla in Chiapas, close to the Guatemalan border. According to Mexico's Defense Department, soldiers reported hearing gunfire as a convoy of three trucks approached their position. In a confused account, the first vehicle appeared to speed away, prompting two soldiers to fire on another truck carrying migrants from Nepal, Cuba, India, Pakistan, and other countries.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Following the incident, the two soldiers involved were handed over to civilian prosecutors for questioning but have not been charged yet. The shootings are under investigation to determine if any commanders might face consequences. Sheinbaum emphasized that such incidents must not recur. The soldiers have been relieved of duty pending investigations.

Local prosecutors confirmed that all victims died from gunshot wounds. However, it remains unclear if the deaths resulted directly from army fire. Sheinbaum did not disclose whether any weapons were found in the migrants' truck. Out of 33 migrants in the vehicle, 17 were unharmed.

Historical Context and Reactions

This incident marks the worst killing of migrants by authorities in Mexico since 2021 when police in Tamaulipas killed 17 migrants. The area is known for migrant smuggling routes where individuals are often crammed into freight trucks. Irineo Mujica, a migrant rights activist, expressed doubt that migrants or their smugglers fired at the army, suggesting they usually pass through by paying bribes.

The U.N. refugee agency in Mexico expressed concern over the events in Chiapas. They highlighted the risks faced by migrants during their journeys and stressed the need for legal access and integration to prevent such tragedies.

Potential Political Implications

If it is confirmed that army fire caused these deaths, it could be a significant embarrassment for President Sheinbaum. On Thursday, she attended a large military ceremony where armed forces pledged loyalty to her. She has continued former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's policy of granting extensive powers to the military in various sectors.

This is not an isolated incident; Mexican forces have previously fired on vehicles carrying migrants in this region. In 2021, the National Guard shot at a pickup truck with migrants, resulting in one death and four injuries. Initially claiming they were fired upon by armed individuals in the truck, this was later disproven by the National Human Rights Commission.

In another 2021 case, state police in Tamaulipas killed 17 migrants and two Mexican citizens under false pretenses of being attacked by drug cartels involved in smuggling. Eleven officers were convicted of homicide and sentenced to over 50 years in prison after attempting to cover up their crime by burning victims' bodies.
