Five Migrants Confirmed Dead as Coast Guard Conducts Multiple Rescue Operations Off Greece
At least five migrants have died, and many remain unaccounted for after multiple rescue operations near Crete, Greece. Over 200 individuals were saved in these efforts, according to the coast guard on Saturday. The operations began late Friday, with one still ongoing. The incidents occurred south of Crete, near the island of Gavdos, and off the southern Peloponnese region.

In the ongoing rescue operation, 39 people were saved and brought to Crete. Unfortunately, five bodies were recovered from the sea. Survivors reported that many others were on the same vessel. The coast guard stated that nine vessels, including their ships, an Italian navy frigate, and four merchant ships, along with two helicopters, continued to participate in the rescue efforts on Saturday.
Rescue Operations Near Gavdos
Two separate rescue missions near Gavdos successfully saved 47 and 89 individuals, respectively. These operations have now concluded. Meanwhile, another group of 28 migrants was rescued off the Peloponnese coast without any reports of missing persons.
The Greek coast guard conducted extensive search and rescue missions overnight. They received assistance from navy helicopters, commercial vessels, and ships from Frontex, the European border protection agency.
Increasing Migrant Arrivals
Greek government officials attribute the rise in migrant arrivals to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This situation has led to increased pressure on Greece's maritime borders as people seek safer environments.
The ongoing humanitarian crisis highlights the challenges faced by migrants attempting dangerous sea crossings. The Greek authorities continue to respond to these emergencies with international support.
The situation remains critical as rescue operations persist in challenging conditions at sea. Efforts are focused on saving lives and providing necessary aid to those affected by these perilous journeys.
