12 Migrants Perish as Boat Splits in English Channel Catastrophe
A boat carrying migrants disintegrated in the English Channel on Tuesday, resulting in 12 fatalities, authorities reported. Most victims were women, some under 18, and many lacked life vests. Officials described it as the deadliest migrant accident in the channel this year.

Olivier Barbarin, mayor of Le Portel near Boulogne-sur-Mer, stated, "Unfortunately, the bottom of the boat ripped open." He added that those who cannot swim in rough waters face immediate danger. The incident highlights Europe's stringent asylum policies and growing xenophobia pushing migrants northward.
Rescue Efforts and Casualties
Rescuers retrieved 65 individuals from the English Channel after a search lasting over four hours, according to Lt. Etienne Baggio, spokesperson for the French agency overseeing the area. Doctors confirmed 12 deaths. Another 12 people were hospitalised, with two in critical condition.
Baggio noted that many aboard lacked life vests and called it the deadliest migrant boat tragedy in the channel this year. The rescue operation involved three helicopters, a plane, two fishing boats, and over six other vessels.
Previous Incidents and Migrant Statistics
Earlier this year, four migrants died in July when an inflatable boat capsized. In April, five others, including a child, perished in another attempt. In January, five bodies were recovered after a migrant boat encountered difficulties in harsh winter conditions.
The International Organisation for Migration reported that before Tuesday's accident, at least 30 migrants had died or gone missing attempting to cross to the UK this year. UK Home Office data revealed that at least 2,109 migrants tried to cross the channel on small boats in the past week.
Official Responses
Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin visited Boulogne-sur-Mer to meet those handling what he termed a "terrible shipwreck." He described the boat as frail and small—less than 7 metres long—and noted smugglers are increasingly packing more people onto such vessels. Most passengers were believed to be from Eritrea.
UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper called it "a horrifying and deeply tragic incident" and praised French rescuers for saving many lives despite not being able to save everyone. She condemned smugglers for prioritising profits over human lives.
International Cooperation
Last week, leaders of France and Britain agreed to enhance cooperation on illegal migration in the channel. Cooper emphasised the importance of dismantling smuggler gangs and strengthening border security to prevent such tragedies.
In another incident on Tuesday involving migrants seeking better lives in Europe, a boat capsized off Libya's coast, leaving one dead and 22 missing. Libyan authorities confirmed these figures.
The agency overseeing the English Channel rescue operation said the boat encountered trouble off Gris-Nez point between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais. Sea temperatures off northern France were around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit).
This tragic event underscores the perilous journeys migrants undertake and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address illegal migration and human smuggling.
