Middle East On Alert: Lufthansa Cancels Flights To Iran Amid Security Concerns

The extension of flight suspensions to Tehran by Lufthansa due to security concerns in the Middle East was announced, on Thursday.

The decision to extend the suspension was made to avoid requiring crew members to disembark and spend the night in the Iranian capital.

Middle East On Alert

Lufthansa stated that flights to and from Tehran would likely remain suspended until April 13, with the suspension extended by two days, as reported by Alarabiya. A spokesperson for Lufthansa explained that the decision was prompted by security considerations, particularly regarding crew safety during layovers in Tehran.

The spokesperson emphasized the importance of avoiding disembarkation in Tehran for safety reasons. Austrian Airlines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, also adjusted its flight schedule to Tehran on Thursday. Although the flight was still planned to operate, Austrian Airlines delayed departure from Vienna by several hours to minimize the time between landing and departure in Tehran, thereby reducing the layover duration, as reported by Reuters.

As of now, there has been no immediate update from other international airlines regarding their operations in Tehran. Iranian airspace remains a critical overflight route for airlines like Emirates and Qatar Airways, especially for flights to North America. The situation underscores ongoing security concerns in the region following suspected Israeli airstrikes and heightened tensions in the Middle East, as per media reports.
