Michigan Teens Face Adult Charges in Shocking Plot to Murder Mother
A 14-year-old girl from the Detroit area and her 17-year-old boyfriend have been charged as adults for allegedly plotting to kill the girl's mother. The Macomb County prosecutor's office stated that the boy entered the family's Eastpointe home through an open door in July and attempted to strangle the mother while she was asleep. He fled after being confronted by other family members.

Eastpointe police revealed that the teens had planned the attack together. "The minor daughter had met another minor on a social media app," Eastpointe Police Chief Corey Haines told WJBK-TV. "They decided together that they were going to kill mom." The girl's mother had taken her phone away due to issues at home, and she was unaware of the boyfriend's existence.
The girl was arraigned on August 14 on charges of solicitation of murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder, with her bond set at USD 1 million. The 17-year-old was arraigned on August 12 for conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder and assault with intent to murder, with his bond set at USD 2.5 million. Both are currently held at the county's Juvenile Justice Centre.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
The teenagers face probable cause hearings on Tuesday in Eastpointe District Court. Their names have not been released due to their ages. Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido emphasized the seriousness of their actions, stating, "This level of criminal activity is unacceptable, and we intend to treat it with the severity it deserves." He added, "That's why we are seeking to charge these juveniles as adults — because when you commit adult crimes, you face adult consequences."
The incident has raised concerns about juvenile crime and the influence of social media on young people. The police chief's comments highlight how easily minors can be influenced by online interactions, leading to severe consequences.
The girl's mother survived the attack, but details about her current condition have not been disclosed. The case continues to unfold as authorities investigate further into the teens' motivations and planning.
Both teenagers remain in custody as they await their court hearings. The community is closely watching the case, which underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in dealing with serious crimes involving minors.
The legal proceedings will determine the next steps for both teens, who could face significant prison time if convicted as adults. The case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking within social media interactions among youth.
This incident has shocked many in the Detroit area, prompting discussions about parental control and awareness regarding children's online activities. It also highlights the need for vigilance in monitoring young people's behaviour both online and offline.
The outcome of this case may set a precedent for how similar cases are handled in the future, particularly concerning charging minors as adults for severe crimes.
