Meta's Facebook And Instagram To Sack 3000 Employees

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is initiating layoffs across various countries. This move aims to speed up the hiring of machine learning engineers. Internal memos revealed that employees in over a dozen nations will be notified between February 11 and February 18. The company plans to cut about 5% of its "lowest performers" while filling some positions.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged these layoffs, stating the need to "raise the bar on performance" by swiftly removing underperformers. He also warned that 2024 and 2025 would be challenging years for Meta. Despite investing heavily in AI and metaverse projects, Meta faces pressure to maintain profitability and efficiency.

Layoffs Across Multiple Regions

According to a memo by Janelle Gale, Meta's head of people, notifications for US employees were expected by Monday at 5am local time. However, workers in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands are exempt due to local regulations. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on these memos.

Peng Fan, VP of Engineering for Monetization, emphasized the need for an accelerated hiring process for machine learning engineers. This process is set to occur from February 11 to March 13. Fan expressed gratitude for employees' support in aligning with Meta's priorities for 2025.

Focus on Performance

The Friday memo described the layoffs as "performance terminations." It was first reported by The Information. According to layoff.fyi, over 3,000 employees are affected by this decision. Unlike previous large-scale layoffs, Meta planned to keep its offices open without issuing further updates on Monday.

Meta's strategy includes trimming its workforce while continuing investments in AI and metaverse initiatives. The job cuts reflect the increasing demand for tech companies to stay efficient and profitable amidst evolving industry challenges.
