Meta Cracking Down On Hate Speech - All You Need To Know
Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday that it will begin removing more posts targeting "Zionists," specifically when the term is used to refer to Jewish people and Israelis rather than supporters of the political movement.
In a blog post, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram stated that it would delete content that attacks "Zionists" if it includes antisemitic stereotypes or threats of harm through intimidation or violence directed at Jews or Israelis, as reported by NDTV.

Meta Cracking Down On Hate Speech
Meta's hate speech policy prohibits direct attacks on individuals based on protected characteristics, which include race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, disability, and gender identity, among others. The social media giant acknowledged that its current policies, which interpret "Zionist" as a proxy for Jewish or Israeli individuals only in limited contexts, do not adequately address broader uses of the term, as reported by NDTV.
This policy update follows consultations by Meta with 145 stakeholders from civil society and academia across different global regions. It comes amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Meta has faced longstanding criticism over its handling of content related to the Middle East, with recent accusations from rights groups that it has suppressed pro-Palestinian content on its platforms.
What Is Meta's Hate Speech Policy?
Hate speech on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads is not allowed due to its creation of an environment of intimidation and exclusion, and potential promotion of offline violence, based on attacks against individuals rather than concepts or institutions.
Protected characteristics such as race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religious affiliation, caste, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity, and serious disease are defined as hate speech targets, along with additional considerations for age and other non-protected characteristics when referenced with a protected characteristic, as per meta's Blog Post.
Commentary and criticism on immigration policies are permitted, but we restrict harmful stereotypes and slurs used to attack individuals based on their characteristics. Content sharing that includes slurs or hate speech for condemnation or reporting purposes, or used self-referentially or in an empowering context, is allowed provided clear intent is indicated, although content may be removed when intent is unclear.
