Melinda French Gates Resigns As Co-Chair Of Gates Foundation

Melinda French Gates, co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world's leading philanthropic organizations, has announced her decision to step down as co-chair. This move comes after two decades of significant contributions to global health and education. French Gates shared her decision on the X platform, emphasizing her pride in the foundation's achievements and its role in addressing global inequities.

French Gates commended the foundation's CEO, Mark Suzman, and its expanded board of trustees for their dedication. Her departure marks a new phase in her philanthropic journey, with plans to focus on women and families through her organization, Pivotal Ventures. Bill Gates expressed his gratitude for her contributions, acknowledging the impact she has had on the foundation.

The foundation will undergo a name change to the Gates Foundation, as confirmed by a spokesperson. In line with the separation agreement, French Gates will receive USD 12.5 billion for her future philanthropic efforts, funded personally by Bill Gates.

The Gates Foundation has been a pivotal force in global health, supporting organizations such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the World Health Organization, and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. Its initiatives span from combating child malnutrition and maternal health issues to climate change adaptation for small farmers. In the US, its funding has influenced education policy and antipoverty initiatives.

Latanya Mapp, president and CEO of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, noted that French Gates' departure was unexpected but not impulsive. She highlighted French Gates' role in integrating a gender equity perspective within the foundation's programs.

Upon her resignation on June 7, Bill Gates will become the sole chair of the foundation's board. CEO Mark Suzman has taken a more visible role in recent years, including authoring the foundation's annual letter since 2022.

Linsey McGoey raised questions about the concentration of power within the foundation and its implications for democratic accountability. The foundation's significant financial influence comes with responsibilities that some argue should be more broadly distributed.

Suzman conveyed French Gates' decision to foundation employees, noting her desire to focus on reversing the rollback of women's rights globally. He acknowledged her popularity within the organization and her impact on its gender equity initiatives.

As of December 2023, the Gates Foundation holds an endowment of USD 75.2 billion and plans to allocate USD 8.6 billion in 2024 towards its various programs. This transition marks a significant moment for one of the most influential philanthropic entities worldwide.
