Melinda French Gates, a prominent figure in global philanthropy, has announced her decision to step down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. French Gates commended the foundation's CEO, Mark Suzman, and its expanded board of trustees for their roles in steering the organization post her divorce announcement in May 2021. She expressed her readiness to embark on a new chapter of philanthropy through her organization, Pivotal Ventures. Bill Gates, in a statement, acknowledged French Gates' critical contributions and expressed his confidence in her future endeavors.

As part of her departure agreement, French Gates will receive $12.5 billion, which she intends to allocate towards initiatives focusing on women and families. The specifics of whether these funds will be sourced from the foundation itself remain unclear. The foundation's leadership confirmed the announcement to its employees, highlighting French Gates' commitment to reversing the setbacks faced by women's rights in recent years.

The Gates Foundation, with an endowment of $75.2 billion as of December 2023, plans to allocate $8.6 billion for its philanthropic activities in 2024. This announcement underscores the foundation's ongoing commitment to addressing global challenges. The Associated Press, which receives financial support from both the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for news coverage in Africa and Pivotal Ventures for reporting on women in the workforce, reported this development.
