Meet Han Zheng, China’s Diplomat And Close Confidant Of Xi Jinping At Trump’s Inauguration
In an unprecedented diplomatic move, Vice President Han Zheng will represent China at Donald Trump's inauguration on Monday, hinting at a possible thaw in Washington-Beijing relations.
A First in Diplomatic History

President-elect Donald Trump has invited several foreign leaders to his inauguration, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. This is a departure from tradition, as no foreign head of state has officially attended a US presidential inauguration. In China's case, such invitations have previously been limited to diplomatic officials.
However, Vice President Han Zheng-a close confidant of Xi Jinping-will represent China at the event. This choice is seen as a strategic gesture, signaling Beijing's interest in mending ties while avoiding exposing Xi directly to potential fallout if relations deteriorate.
Who Is Han Zheng?
Han Zheng, born in Shanghai, had humble beginnings during China's Cultural Revolution, working on a collective farm and later in various industrial roles. Returning to Shanghai, Han advanced through the ranks of the Communist Party in the 1980s and 1990s as China's economy expanded.
After serving as Shanghai's mayor and party secretary, Han joined the powerful Politburo Standing Committee in 2017. As vice president, he has taken on a significant role in diplomacy, earning a reputation for his discreet "silent diplomacy."
High-Stakes Discussions
Ahead of the Trump's Inauguration, Han met with US Vice President-elect JD Vance and business leaders, including Elon Musk. During the meeting, Han emphasized the shared economic interests between the two nations, despite ongoing tensions over trade, technology, and territorial disputes.
Trump's proposed 60% tariffs on Chinese imports and the US ban on TikTok have strained relations further. Han, however, reiterated China's commitment to fostering a better business environment for foreign firms and expressed hope for expanded US investments in China.
China's decision to send Han Zheng highlights its cautious approach to handling US-China relations during Trump's presidency. His presence at the inauguration shows a willingness to engage, even as both countries face major economic and political challenges.
Only time will tell if this gesture leads to better relations or if tensions will continue.
