MEA S Jaishankar Meets US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Amid H-1B Visa Row

New Delhi and Washington are negotiating a trade agreement, focusing on H-1B visa issues and economic relations. Both nations aim to enhance bilateral ties amidst recent tensions over visa fee increases.

Efforts to mend relations between New Delhi and Washington are underway, with both sides working towards a trade agreement. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is spearheading a delegation to Washington for negotiations. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the 80th United Nations General Assembly session, where discussions focused on H-1B visa issues and trade matters.

The meeting between Jaishankar and Rubio follows their previous encounter in July at the 10th Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Washington. This dialogue comes after tensions rose due to former President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on Indian goods and increase H-1B visa application fees to $100,000.

Trade Agreement Negotiations

Despite these challenges, both nations are actively pursuing a Bilateral Investment Treaty to restore stability in their economic relationship. President Trump expressed optimism about reaching an agreement, stating that there would be "no difficulty" in finalising a deal. He praised Prime Minister Modi's leadership and thanked him for supporting peace efforts in Ukraine.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported "positive discussions" during the September 16 visit by officials from the Office of the United States Trade Representative to India. These talks aim to address trade imbalances and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Impact of Visa Fee Increase

The announcement of increased H-1B visa application fees has caused concern among thousands of skilled workers, many from India, who depend on this programme for employment in the US technology sector. However, the White House clarified that this fee hike applies only to new applicants, not current visa holders.

During Senate hearings for Sergio Gor, nominated as US ambassador to India, Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted India's significance as one of America's top global relationships. This underscores the importance both nations place on maintaining strong diplomatic ties.

Prime Minister Modi responded positively to Trump's comments, pledging to enhance India-US relations further. As negotiations continue, both countries remain committed to resolving trade disputes and fostering mutual cooperation.
