MEA Hits Back At Iran Supreme Leader: 'Look At Your Own Record First'

India has strongly condemned recent comments made by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, regarding the situation of minorities in India.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement on Monday, describing Khamenei's remarks as "misinformed and unacceptable," and advised other countries to review their own records before criticizing others.

Iran Supreme Leader Tweet: What Did It Say?

In his statement, Khamenei highlighted the "suffering" of Muslims in India, Gaza, and Myanmar, and called for global solidarity among Muslims. He emphasized, "We cannot consider ourselves to be Muslims if we are oblivious to the suffering that a Muslim is enduring in Myanmar, Gaza, India, or any other place," in a post on the social media platform X.

This is not the first time Khamenei has commented on India's treatment of minorities. In 2019, he expressed concerns over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir following the Indian government's decision to abrogate Article 370. At that time, he urged India to adopt a just policy towards the people of Kashmir and to prevent the oppression of Muslims in the region.

Despite these tensions, India and Iran have recently reinforced their bilateral relations through a significant agreement. The two countries signed a long-term pact to operate the Shahid-Beheshti Port Terminal, enhancing regional connectivity. This agreement is set to streamline trade routes between India, Iran, and Afghanistan, offering a strategic alternative to traditional routes passing through Pakistan.

India and Iran, with their rich history of interaction, continue to maintain a relationship characterized by high-level exchanges, commercial cooperation, and cultural and people-to-people ties.
