Mattel Launches First Barbie Doll Featuring Type 1 Diabetes Representation

Mattel has unveiled a Barbie doll representing individuals with Type 1 diabetes, marking a step towards greater inclusivity in its toy line. The company collaborated with Breakthrough T1D, formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, to ensure the doll's design authentically represents the community. This includes accessories that mirror the medical equipment used by those with Type 1 diabetes.

First Barbie Doll with Type 1 Diabetes

The new Barbie features a continuous glucose monitor on her arm and an insulin pump at her waist. She also holds a phone displaying an app linked to these devices. Additionally, she carries a blue purse for essential supplies or snacks. Her outfit, a blue polka-dotted top and skirt set, symbolises diabetes awareness.

Inclusivity in Mattel's Fashionistas Line

This addition is part of Mattel's Fashionistas line, which aims to reflect diverse realities. The line includes dolls with various skin tones, hair textures, and body types. It also features dolls with disabilities, like a Ken doll with a prosthetic leg and a Barbie with hearing aids. In 2023, Mattel introduced its first doll with Down syndrome.

Emily Mazreku, director of marketing strategy at Breakthrough T1D, emphasised the importance of visibility for those living with Type 1 diabetes. "Visibility matters for everyone facing Type 1 diabetes," she stated. As someone who lives with the condition herself, Mazreku expressed how meaningful it is for Barbie to help raise awareness about Type 1 diabetes.

Raising Awareness Through Representation

The new Barbie was introduced at Breakthrough T1D's 2025 Children's Congress in Washington, DC. The event focuses on advocating for continued federal research funding. This year, the organisation is particularly concerned about the Special Diabetes Programme, which is set to expire in September.

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, as of 2021, approximately 38.4 million Americans had diabetes. This figure represents about 11.6% of the US population. Of these, around 2 million people have Type 1 diabetes, including about 304,000 children and teenagers under 20 years old.

Mattel believes this new doll will allow more children to see themselves represented in Barbie. The company stated that this initiative is part of their broader commitment to inclusivity within their product lines.
