Matt Gaetz Announces He Will Not Return to Congress After Withdrawing from Attorney General Consideration

Matt Gaetz, a former representative from Florida, announced on Friday that he will not return to Congress. This decision follows his withdrawal from consideration for the attorney general position under President-elect Donald Trump. Gaetz faces increasing allegations of sexual misconduct. "I'm still going to be in the fight, but it's going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress," Gaetz stated during an interview with conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. He mentioned having "some other goals in life that I'm eager to pursue with my wife and my family."

Matt Gaetz Wont Return to Congress Next Year

The announcement came shortly after Gaetz stepped down from the Cabinet nomination process. This move was influenced by ongoing federal and House Ethics investigations, which raised doubts about his confirmation as the nation's chief federal law enforcement officer. Gaetz, aged 42, has strongly denied all allegations against him.

Trump's Attorney General Nomination

Gaetz's potential nomination as attorney general surprised many within the Justice Department. It highlighted Trump's preference for appointing loyalists in key positions, especially after facing criminal cases himself. Hours after Gaetz withdrew, Trump nominated Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general. Bondi brings extensive legal experience and is known for her loyalty, a trait Trump values highly.

Gaetz's future remains uncertain as he is no longer part of the House of Representatives. His resignation from Congress coincided with Trump's nomination of him for attorney general. Despite winning reelection earlier this month, some speculated he might still take office for another term on January 3.

However, Gaetz, who has spent 14 years in state and national politics, confirmed he is leaving Congress. "I think that eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress," he remarked.
