Matt Gaetz Withdraws His Nomination for Attorney General Amidst Political Backlash
Former Congressman Matt Gaetz has decided to withdraw from the nomination for Attorney General in the upcoming Trump administration, starting January 20, 2025. This decision came after facing criticism from both opposition and Republican Senators. Gaetz announced his withdrawal a day after meeting with Senators on Capitol Hill.

Gaetz expressed gratitude for the support he received but acknowledged that his confirmation was becoming a distraction. "I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback - and the incredible support of so many. While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance transition," he stated.
Gaetz Withdraws Amidst Controversy
The former Florida Congressman emphasised the urgency of having Trump's Department of Justice ready from day one. "There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General. Trump's DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1," Gaetz shared on social media.
Despite stepping back, Gaetz remains committed to supporting Donald J. Trump’s presidency. "I will forever be honoured that President Trump nominated me to lead the Department of Justice and I'm certain he will Save America," he added. His decision follows ongoing scrutiny over a federal sex trafficking investigation, which raised doubts about his confirmation prospects.
Trump's Response to Gaetz's Decision
Donald Trump accepted Gaetz's decision, expressing appreciation for his efforts. "I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the administration, for which he has much respect," Trump remarked.
Trump also conveyed optimism about Gaetz's future contributions. "Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!" he said. The decision underscores the challenges faced by Gaetz amidst ongoing investigations that have clouded his potential confirmation as Attorney General.
Gaetz's withdrawal highlights the complexities surrounding political appointments amid personal controversies. His commitment to Trump's success remains steadfast despite stepping away from this significant role.
