Teen Charged with Planning Mass Shooting at Ohio Synagogue

A 13-year-old boy in Canton, Ohio, faces charges for allegedly planning a mass shooting at a local synagogue, underscoring the concerning rise in antisemitism.

Synagogue Shooting Plot Foiled: Teenager Charged

A 13-year-old boy from Canton, Ohio, has been charged with allegedly planning a mass shooting of a local Jewish synagogue. The teenager, who remains unnamed in court documents due to his minor status, faces charges of inducing panic and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.

Accusations and Evidence

The boy is accused of posting a "detailed plan to complete a mass shooting" at Temple Israel in Canton, a city south of Akron, on the live streaming platform Discord. The charges come amid a concerning rise in antisemitism in the United States and worldwide. In the US alone, antisemitic incidents saw a significant 35% increase from 2021 to 2022.

Discovery and Investigation

The Canton synagogue case came to light on September 1 and was promptly reported to law enforcement, as per court documents. A hearing for the case is scheduled for December 20. Attempts to reach a spokesperson for the Stark County Sheriff's Office, which is handling the investigation, and the boy's attorney for comments were unsuccessful.

Response from Temple Israel

Rabbi Komerofsky, the spiritual leader of Temple Israel, declined to comment on the situation, citing the involvement of a minor. However, the Anti-Defamation League of Cleveland released a statement on social media expressing gratitude for law enforcement's swift action. The league emphasized the importance of using this incident as a "teachable" moment for young individuals.

Condemnation of Hate and Threats

The Anti-Defamation League firmly stated in its statement that hate and threats, whether on social media or in real life, will not be tolerated. The organization's stance aligns with the growing concerns about the rise in antisemitism and the need for proactive measures to combat such acts of intolerance.
