Manhattan Shooting Incident Claims Lives Of Four, Including NYPD Officer Shane Tamura

In a tragic incident in central Manhattan, at least four individuals lost their lives, including a New York Police Department officer. The shooting occurred on Monday evening and involved a gunman identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas. According to CNN, Tamura died from a self-inflicted injury.

The shooter was reportedly wearing a bullet-resistant vest and wielding an AR-style rifle when he opened fire inside the Park Avenue skyscraper. This area is notably crowded, being close to Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Centre, and the Museum of Modern Art.

Details of the Incident

The suspect initially exchanged gunfire with an NYPD officer in the lobby of 345 Park Avenue around 6:40 pm. He then moved to the 33rd floor before barricading himself within the office tower, possibly on the 32nd floor. This led to a lockdown in the vicinity.

New York Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences on X, stating that the officer had been "struck down." He extended his "deepest sympathies" to the officer's family during this difficult time.

Police Response and Investigation

Police Commissioner Jessica Disch confirmed on X that the situation was under control and that the lone shooter had been neutralised. However, she did not provide further details about the incident itself.

Fox News reported that at least six people were shot, including a police officer. The New York Police Department deployed drones near Park Avenue during peak evening hours as officers swarmed the area equipped with long guns and ballistic vests.

Building Details and Context

The skyscraper at 345 Park Avenue is home to several financial firms like Blackstone, KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and even NFL headquarters. It occupies an entire city block just south of Central Park and is one of few buildings in New York City with its own zip code.

This shooting marks the 254th mass shooting in the United States this year according to data from Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organisation tracking gun-related violence across the country.
