Incident Details

According to the DCI, the incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Monday inside a parking garage at the Hard Rock Casino in Sioux City. A Sioux City officer was parked inside the garage when a white truck driven by Perez-Garcia rammed the patrol vehicle head-on. Responding officers encountered the truck as it exited the garage and it collided with a second patrol vehicle in the same manner.

Confrontation and Shooting

After the collisions, Perez-Garcia emerged from the truck brandishing a length of chain with a metal object attached, acting in an aggressive and threatening manner. The DCI stated that officers attempted to de-escalate the situation and disarm Perez-Garcia, but their efforts were unsuccessful. As Perez-Garcia continued to approach the officers while swinging the weapon, they resorted to using their firearms, resulting in his death at the scene.

Officer Injured

One of the officers involved in the incident sustained injuries when his patrol vehicle was struck by the truck. Sioux City Police Chief Rex Mueller confirmed that the officer received medical treatment for the injuries.

Ongoing Investigation

The Iowa DCI is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, including the circumstances leading up to the confrontation and the use of force by the officers. The names of the officers involved will be released once the investigation is completed.
