California Man Nicholas John Roske Pleads Guilty to Attempting to Assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh
A man from California, Nicholas John Roske, plans to plead guilty to attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. This incident occurred nearly three years ago at Kavanaugh's residence in a Washington, DC suburb. Roske's attorneys revealed this intention in a court filing. He was arrested in June 2022 near Kavanaugh's home in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Roske, who was 26 at the time of his arrest, was found with a gun, a knife, and zip ties. He arrived in the neighbourhood by taxi shortly after 1 am, dressed in black. His lawyers have requested a hearing next Monday or Tuesday for him to enter his guilty plea. Prosecutors have agreed to this request.
Attempted Murder Charge and Legal Proceedings
The charge against Roske is attempting to murder a United States justice, which could result in a life sentence. Despite this serious charge, he has not reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. A trial for Roske is set to begin on June 9.
Following his arrest, Roske confessed to a police detective that he was distressed by a leaked draft opinion suggesting the Supreme Court might overturn Roe v. Wade. This landmark case concerns abortion rights. According to an FBI agent's affidavit, Roske believed that killing one justice could alter the court's decisions "for decades to come."
Motivations Behind the Assassination Attempt
Roske also expressed anger over the Uvalde, Texas school shooting and feared Kavanaugh would vote against gun control laws. These factors contributed to his actions. The leaked opinion draft had sparked protests at several justices' homes.
Roske was apprehended after calling 911 and expressing suicidal thoughts near Kavanaugh's home. Two US marshals, part of the justices' 24-hour security detail, spotted him. His arrest led the House to pass a bill enhancing security for justices' families.
Mental Evaluation and Judicial Changes
In October 2022, US District Judge Peter Messitte mentioned the likelihood of ordering a mental evaluation for Roske. This assessment would determine if he could assist in his defence or enter a guilty plea. However, Roske's attorney, Andrew Szekely, stated last August that they are not seeking such an evaluation.
Following Judge Messitte's death in January from illness, US District Judge Deborah Boardman took over Roske's case. The legal proceedings continue under her supervision as they await the upcoming hearing for Roske's guilty plea.
This case highlights significant security concerns for Supreme Court justices and their families amid heightened tensions over controversial court decisions.
