Maldivian President Muizzu Secures Supermajority In Parliamentary Elections

In a significant political development, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has achieved a commanding victory in the recent parliamentary elections, securing over 60 seats and thus gaining a supermajority in Parliament. This victory is particularly noteworthy as it serves as a critical assessment of Muizzu's tenure, who is known for his pro-Beijing stance. The election outcomes are drawing considerable attention from regional powerhouses India and China, given the strategic importance of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The Elections Commission (EC) reported a voter turnout of 72.96 per cent, with 207,693 ballots cast by the deadline at 5:00 pm local time. The electorate comprised 104,826 men and 102,867 women out of a total eligible voting population of 284,663. These voters were tasked with electing representatives for 93 constituencies in the 20th People's Majlis from a pool of 368 candidates. Among these were 130 independent candidates, alongside representatives from various political parties including the Jumhoory Party (JP), The Democrats, Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Adhaalath Party (AP), and Maldives National Party (MNP).

Preliminary results have indicated a landslide victory for the PNC, led by President Muizzu, which has secured 67 seats. The main opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), managed to win only 12 seats, while independents claimed 10 seats. Other parties such as MDA and JP secured one seat each, with several parties yet to score.

This election was crucial for President Muizzu amidst allegations of corruption dating back to 2018 and opposition calls for his impeachment just days before the polls. Despite these challenges, Muizzu's party has not only retained but significantly strengthened its position in Maldivian politics.

The election saw the setup of 602 ballot boxes across the Maldives and in three other countries to accommodate overseas voters. This included locations in Thiruvananthapuram, India; Colombo, Sri Lanka; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Polling stations were also established in resorts, prisons, and industrial islands to ensure wide participation.

President Muizzu's victory comes at a time of evolving diplomatic relations between the Maldives and its key maritime neighbours. Since assuming office in November last year, Muizzu has made notable visits to China, meeting with top leaders including President Xi Jinping. These meetings have culminated in defence cooperation agreements and several infrastructure development projects between China and the Maldives. Meanwhile, India has observed these developments closely, given its strategic initiatives like 'SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the 'Neighbourhood First Policy’, aimed at strengthening ties within the IOR.

The election results underscore a significant shift in Maldivian politics with potential implications for regional diplomacy and power dynamics in the Indian Ocean Region. As President Muizzu consolidates power with a strong parliamentary majority, the focus now turns to how this will influence the Maldives' foreign policy and relations with major powers like India and China.
