Maldives Vs India: Island Nation Welcomes China's Spy Ship In Indian Ocean

The Maldives government on Tuesday confirmed that a Chinese "research vessel" known as the Xian Yang Hong 03, suspected of being a spy ship mapping the Indian Ocean floor for military reasons, is set to dock in the capital Male early next month. The ship won't carry out any "research" during its time in Maldivian waters, with the island nation stating that clearance was sought for "rotation and replenishment."

The Island nation said, "The Maldives has always been a welcoming destination for vessels of friendly countries, and continues to host both civilian and military vessels making port calls for peaceful purposes..."

"Such calls enhance bilateral ties between the Maldives and partner countries, and also demonstrate the centuries-old tradition of welcoming vessels from friendly countries..." Maldives said.

Welcoming China's vessels is seen as an indirect attack on India, and this move will create more differences between Male and New Delhi. This also shows that Maldives is inclined towards Beijing now. Taking advantage of differences between India and Maldives, China is eye to potentially significant geopolitical and military shift in the Indian Ocean Region.

The 4,300-ton Xiang Yang Hong 03 is designated as a 'research' vessel engaged in mapping the Indian Ocean floor. Such research activities offer valuable data to predict natural disasters like underwater earthquakes, helping to mitigate potential catastrophic effects. Additionally, mapping allows China to navigate these waters in the future, utilizing submarines and submersible drones.
