On Sunday, the Maldives government took action by suspending three deputy ministers following their social media posts containing disrespectful comments directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to reports. The three suspended ministers are Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Sharif, and Mahzoom Maajid.

Maldives Govt Expels 3 Ministers Over Derogatory Remarks Against PM Modi

"The Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the Government of Maldives," the Maldives government said while condemning derogatory remarks against the Indian Prime Minister.

Previously, Maldives' Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Mariyam Shiuna, had posted critical remarks about Modi on social media platform X. This action drew condemnation from former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed.

In her post, Shiuna said, "What a clown. The puppet of Israel Mr. Narendra diver with life jacket. #VisitMaldives #SunnySideOfLife." She also compared India to cow dung. Later, when the controversy sparked, Shiuna deleted her post carrying photos of PM Modi from his recent Lakshadweep visit. Malsha Sharif, a deputy minister and colleague of Shiuna, similarly made derogatory remarks about India and the tourism campaign in the Maldives.

These posts, accompanied by comments from other notable politicians and leaders, provoked numerous users to make a range of racist remarks targeting Indians and Indian tourists visiting the Maldives.

"What appalling language by Maldives Government official @shiuna_m towards the leader of a key ally, that is instrumental for Maldives' security and prosperity. @MMuizzu gov must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect gov policy," Mohamed Nasheed said in a tweet.
