Maldives Election: A Vote for Autonomy and Against Foreign Coercion, Says President Muizzu
In a significant political development, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu highlighted the recent general elections as a testament to the Maldivian people's desire for autonomy and resistance against foreign influence. Speaking at a celebratory event following the election, President Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, underscored the victory of the Peoples National Congress (PNC) and its coalition, which secured a commanding majority in the Parliament.

The PNC, under Muizzu's leadership, clinched 68 out of 93 seats in Sunday's polls. Alongside, its coalition partners, the Maldives National Party (MNP) and Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), won one and two seats respectively, ensuring a robust two-thirds majority in the Peoples Majlis. This victory is seen as a consolidation of power for Muizzu, who has been vocal about maintaining Maldivian sovereignty and freedom from foreign intervention.
President Muizzu's administration has been marked by significant foreign policy shifts, notably the withdrawal of most of the 88 Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. These personnel were part of an Indian initiative that gifted three aviation platforms to the island nation. The president's actions reflect his campaign rhetoric that emphasized sovereignty and an "India Out" stance, which resonated with voters during his presidential campaign last year.
The election results have been interpreted by President Muizzu as a clear mandate from the Maldivian people to uphold Islamic faith and principles as central to the country's identity and future direction. He also views this outcome as a message to international observers about the Maldivians' collective vision and objectives, emphasizing autonomy in national decision-making processes without external pressures.
Since taking office in November last year, President Muizzu has made significant overtures towards China, strengthening bilateral ties, especially in defense cooperation. This pivot towards Beijing is indicative of the Maldives' strategic recalibration under Muizzu's presidency.
The electoral success of PNC provides President Muizzu with legislative support to further shape the Maldives' foreign policy, particularly in relation to its strategic position in the Indian Ocean, close to India's southern coast. The outcome also represents a setback for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), led by former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is considered more favorable towards India. The MDP managed to secure only 15 seats in this election.
In his address following the election victory, President Muizzu extended an olive branch to political opponents and called for unity in advancing national development. He emphasized moving beyond differences and working collectively for the welfare of all Dhivehi citizens. This call for unity underscores a desire to consolidate gains from the election victory and steer the country towards a future defined by shared prosperity and independence.
The recent elections in the Maldives have thus not only reshaped its domestic political landscape but also have implications for regional geopolitics, signaling a potential shift in alliances and strategic orientations in the Indian Ocean region.
