Maldives declares state of emergency for 30 days

Malé, Nov 4: The government in Maldives has declared a state of emergency for 30 days, citing threats to national security and public safety.

The decision has been taken a day after an explosive device was found near official residence of President Yameen Abdul Gayoom, announced Attorney General Mohamed Anil, reported Maldives Independent.

State of emergency declared in Maldives

"Under article 254 of the constitution, a state of emergency "may include the temporary suspension of the operation of laws and infringement of certain fundamental rights and freedoms."

The government has announced state of emergency two days ahead of a mass protest planned by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The move comes at a time of heightened tensions in island nation when an explosion ripped through a speedboat carrying President Yameen, his wife and other when they were returning home after preforming Haj in Saudi Arabia on September 28.
