US Army Reservist Kills 18 People in Maine Bowling Alley Shooting

A US Army reservist opened fire at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston, Maine, killing 18 people. Authorities confirm that the shooter purchased his weapons legally and likely had underlying mental health issues.

A shocking incident unfolded in Lewiston, US on October 28 where a US Army reservist unleashed a deadly shooting spree at a local bowling alley and bar, resulting in the death of 18 innocent people. The perpetrator, identified as Robert Card, was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at a recycling centre in Lisbon Falls.

Maine shooting

The 40-year-old Card who also worked as a firearms instructor was suspected to have injured an additional 13 people during his violent rampage on Wednesday night. Authorities discovered his body on Friday at Maine Recycling Corp property where he had previously worked. Alongside his body were several guns that he had reportedly purchased legally.

Mental Health Issues

According to State Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck, Card had been struggling with mental health issues for some time. His actions seemed to be driven by paranoia and possible auditory hallucinations. However, there was no evidence suggesting that Card had ever been involuntarily committed to any mental health facility.

Maine’s Yellow Flag Law

Under Maine's yellow flag law, authorities can detain someone if they suspect them of being mentally ill and posing a threat to themselves or others. However, this requires prior evaluation by a medical practitioner who must declare them as a potential threat before police can petition for their firearms to be seized.

The Aftermath

In the aftermath of the tragedy, life slowly returned back to normal in Lewiston after days of lockdown due to the shootings. Residents resumed their daily activities while law enforcement officials continued investigating the incident.

A Community United by Tragedy

Lisbon Police Chief Ryan McGee expressed hope that despite such tragic events unfolding within their community, the people of Maine would be remembered for their unity and resilience. The incident was one of the deadliest shootings in Maine's history, a state known for its relatively low violent crime rate.

Investigations Continue

As investigations continue, it has been revealed that Card had undergone a mental health evaluation after exhibiting erratic behaviour during Army training. He was admitted to a mental health facility for two weeks after confessing to hearing voices and expressing intentions of attacking a military base.

The Role of Card’s Family

In an act of cooperation with law enforcement authorities, Card's family provided investigators with his name soon after surveillance pictures were released. Despite the tragedy involving their kin, they have shown commendable courage and responsibility towards ensuring justice is served.

This tragic event marks the 36th mass killing in the United States this year alone according to databases maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. As more details about Robert Card's life emerge, questions are being raised on how such incidents can be prevented in future especially considering potential loopholes within existing laws regarding gun ownership among individuals diagnosed with mental health issues.
