John Mahama Sworn in as Ghana's President for Third Time Amid Economic Challenges

John Mahama was inaugurated as Ghana's president for the third time amidst the country's most severe economic crisis in decades. Thousands gathered in the capital to witness the event. Mahama, who previously served as president from July 2012 to January 2017, won the election last year by promising to address economic challenges, corruption, and unemployment. He succeeds Nana Akufo-Addo.

Mahama Takes Office as Ghanas President Again

Mahama first became president following the death of John Evans Atta Mills in July 2012, completing that term and winning the subsequent election. His campaign focused on economic recovery, appealing particularly to young voters seeking solutions to the economic crisis. "There is a seismic shift happening within the system of global economic dominance," he stated during his speech at Independence Square in Accra. He emphasised the importance of regional cooperation for security.

Focus on Economic Recovery

Mahama's inauguration was attended by several African leaders, including Paul Kagame of Rwanda, William Ruto of Kenya, Felix Tshisekedi of Congo, and Capt Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso. In his address, Mahama highlighted plans for economic restoration and macroeconomic stability, alongside good governance and anti-corruption efforts.

The December elections for both president and parliament occurred during a significant cost-of-living crisis. This election was viewed as a test for democracy in a region affected by violence and coups. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) noted that the election was generally peaceful, consistent with Ghana's democratic trends.

Andrew Takyi, founder of Zee Pay, expressed optimism about Mahama's 24-hour economy proposal. "I am hopeful that President Mahama will use the 24-hour economy he campaigned on to improve the country. He can use that to widen the tax base of small and medium enterprises to improve revenue," he said.

Expectations from Mahama's Leadership

Innocent Appiah from Precious Minerals Marketing Company expects Mahama's administration to focus on transparency in the extractive industry. He said he anticipates policies promoting value addition and local content development. "I anticipate policies that promote value addition, local content development and community engagement, ultimately leading to increased revenue generation and socio-economic benefits for Ghanaians," Appiah stated.

Enyonam Agble, a trader at the inauguration, voiced concerns about past corruption under Akufo-Addo's leadership. "There was so much corruption under President Akufo-Addo and all we want is the recovery of all that had been stolen to rebuild the country," Agble remarked.

Mahama's presidency comes at a crucial time for Ghana as it faces economic challenges. His leadership will be closely watched as he implements strategies aimed at stabilising the economy and addressing governance issues.
