The great escape: Mexican drug kingpin escapes prison through tunnel
Mexico, July 14: In a major embarassment for President of Mexico-Enrique Pena Nieto, a most-wanted and notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman escaped from the prison for the second time through a tunnel just under his cell. National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said that the 1.5 kilometer tunnel opened in an abandoned property near the local town.
Guzman had earlier bribed police officials in 2001 for escaping but was unsuccessful. On Saturday, he was seen entering the shower at 8:52 pm, but never came out. BY the time the guards entered his cell, he was gone.
An official said,"I don't think they took into account the cunning of Chapo Guzman and the unlimited resources he has. If Chapo Guzman is able to make it back to the mountainous terrain that he knows so well in the state of Sinaloa ... he may never be captured again."
Guards are reported to have found a motorbike mounted on rails used for carting away soils. Equipment to put air into the tunnel was also found.
One of the world's top crime bosses, running the Sinaloa Cartel, he has smuggled billions of dollars worth of cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamines in the United States.
