Maduro Taps Cabello to Lead Police, Sparking Fears of Harsher Crackdown

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has appointed Diosdado Cabello, a prominent socialist party leader, to oversee the country's police forces. He fought alongside Chávez in a failed 1992 military uprising and briefly served as acting president during a coup against Chávez a decade later. Despite his military background, Chávez chose Maduro, a civilian, as his successor before dying of cancer in 2013.
