Maduro Taps Cabello to Lead Police, Sparking Fears of Harsher Crackdown

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has appointed Diosdado Cabello, a prominent socialist party leader, to oversee the country's police forces. This move empowers a staunch loyalist who has pledged to target government critics amid an ongoing crackdown that has raised concerns among human rights organisations. Cabello's appointment as Interior Minister follows a Cabinet reshuffle after last month's disputed presidential election.

Cabello Leads Police, Concerns Rise

Cabello's Background and Influence

Diosdado Cabello, a retired army lieutenant, is known for his deep ties to the Bolivarian revolution initiated by the late Hugo Chávez. He fought alongside Chávez in a failed 1992 military uprising and briefly served as acting president during a coup against Chávez a decade later. Despite his military background, Chávez chose Maduro, a civilian, as his successor before dying of cancer in 2013.

Cabello has held various significant roles, including National Assembly president and head of the ruling socialist party. However, he had never been part of Maduro's Cabinet until now, leading to speculation about an unspoken rivalry between the two leaders.

Human Rights Concerns

Human rights groups are worried that Cabello's new role will lead to harsher crackdowns on protests following the recent presidential election. The opposition claims their candidate won by a 2-to-1 margin, but Maduro was declared the winner. Since the July 28 election, over 2,000 individuals, including journalists and aid workers, have been detained.

Juanita Goebertus from Human Rights Watch commented on the situation: "If the new Cabinet is a bellwether of what Maduro intends to do, Cabello's appointment is an indication of even more repression to come."

International Reactions and Sanctions

Cabello has faced sanctions from several countries, including the U.S., Canada, European Union, and Switzerland. These sanctions are due to alleged crimes such as money laundering and human rights abuses. The U.S. has also offered a USD 10 million reward for his arrest on federal charges related to leading an alleged drug-smuggling ring known as the "Cartel of the Suns."

Cabello is notorious for his weekly state TV show "Hitting it With a Sledgehammer," where he frequently attacks government opponents. His influence has grown as Venezuelans increasingly blame Maduro for the country's economic decline.

Maduro's Cabinet Reshuffle

Maduro stated that the Cabinet changes aim to "accelerate and deepen changes that the people need." As part of this reshuffle, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez will now also serve as oil minister. Hector Rodriguez, governor of Miranda state surrounding Caracas and seen by some as a potential alternative to Maduro, has been appointed education minister.

Cabello's appointment signals a potential increase in government repression. His strong ties with security forces and aggressive stance against opponents suggest that Venezuela may face more stringent measures in response to dissent.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is expected to present a report at a special meeting of the Organization of American States in Washington. This report will address the government's crackdown following the contested election results.

"They're hiding like rats but we're going to grab them," Cabello said about several prominent opponents in an address to the legislature controlled by Maduro shortly after the election.

Maduro's decision to include Cabello in his Cabinet could indicate his intent to strengthen control over security forces and suppress opposition more forcefully. This development comes amid growing international scrutiny and sanctions against key Venezuelan officials.

The reshuffle reflects Maduro's strategy to consolidate power amidst economic turmoil and political unrest. By appointing loyalists like Cabello to critical positions, Maduro aims to reinforce his administration's grip on power despite widespread discontent among Venezuelans.

As Venezuela navigates this turbulent period, the international community continues to monitor developments closely. The actions of Maduro's government and its impact on human rights and political stability remain under intense scrutiny.

The situation in Venezuela remains complex and fluid, with significant implications for both domestic politics and international relations.
