Lukashenko Tightens Grip: Lifelong Immunity and Opposition Ban

President Lukashenko of Belarus enacts a new law that provides him with lifelong immunity from prosecution and imposes stringent requirements on presidential candidates, effectively eliminating opposition leaders from future elections.

In a move that further consolidates his power and limits opposition, President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus has signed a new law granting himself lifelong immunity from criminal prosecution and imposing stringent restrictions on presidential candidates.

Lifelong Immunity and Family Protection

The new legislation, which theoretically applies to all former presidents and their families, effectively shields Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus for nearly three decades, from any potential legal consequences. The law ensures that Lukashenko, now 69 years old, cannot be held accountable for actions taken during his presidency.

Moreover, the president and his family will receive lifelong state protection, medical care, life and health insurance, and a permanent seat in the upper house of parliament upon resignation.

Tightening Presidential Candidate Requirements

The law significantly tightens the requirements for presidential candidates, making it virtually impossible for opposition leaders living abroad to participate in future elections. Only citizens who have permanently resided in Belarus for at least 20 years and have never held a residence permit in another country are eligible to run.

This provision effectively disqualifies opposition leaders who fled the country following the controversial 2020 presidential election, which was marred by allegations of fraud and sparked mass protests.

Opposition Response and International Concerns

Opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, who sought refuge in Lithuania after the 2020 election, denounced the new law as a reflection of Lukashenko's fear of an uncertain future. She emphasized that Lukashenko's actions have affected the lives of thousands of Belarusians and that he will ultimately be held accountable under international law, regardless of any immunity.

Tikhanovskaya also highlighted the ongoing political repression in Belarus, with approximately 1,500 political prisoners, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski, still behind bars. The opposition is seeking an investigation into the disappearances of opposition politicians and the removal of Ukrainian children from Ukraine.

Lukashenko's new law underscores his determination to maintain power and suppress dissent in Belarus. While it provides him with personal immunity and privileges, it further restricts the democratic process and undermines the prospects for a peaceful transition of power. The international community must continue to pressure Lukashenko to respect human rights, release political prisoners, and allow for genuine democratic elections.
