Los Angeles Wildfires: Over $50 Billion Reported In Loss Due To Devastation, 100,000 Evacuated

Los Angeles Wildfires: Raging wildfires engulfed Los Angeles on Wednesday, claiming at least five lives, destroying hundreds of homes, and severely straining firefighting resources and water supplies.

More than 100,000 residents were ordered to evacuate as hurricane-force winds complicated efforts to control the flames, which had been burning since Tuesday.

Instead of bringing much-needed moisture, the dry winds fuelled the inferno, sweeping across drought-affected land. By sunset, the two most dangerous fires continued to grow, officials confirmed.

A new fire ignited in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles on Wednesday evening, Fire Chief Kristin Crowley announced during a press conference. This prompted further evacuations and brought the total number of active wildfires in Los Angeles County to six. State officials reported that all six were 0% contained, including two blazes that had the city surrounded.

On the western side, the Palisades Fire consumed 15,832 acres (6,406 hectares) and 1,000 structures in the hills between Santa Monica and Malibu, tearing through Topanga Canyon before reaching the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday. It is already considered one of the most destructive fires in Los Angeles' history.

Aerial footage from KTLA television revealed block after block of charred homes in Pacific Palisades, with the smoky landscape occasionally interrupted by the orange glow of homes still ablaze.

Economic Loss Estimates Exceed $50 Billion

US private forecaster AccuWeather estimated on Wednesday that the economic damage and loss caused by the California wildfire, already one of the worst in history, has surpassed $50 billion in preliminary calculations.

AccuWeather's figures, ranging from $52 billion to $57 billion, indicate that if the fire spreads to more densely populated areas, the current estimates will need to be revised upwards.

"Should a large number of additional structures be burned in the coming days, it may become the worst wildfire in modern California history based on the number of structures burned and economic loss," said AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter.

For comparison, AccuWeather's total damage estimates for the 2023 Maui wildfires were between $13 billion and $16 billion.

JP Morgan estimated insured losses from the wildfire could reach approximately $10 billion, stating in a note, "We expect a majority of the losses to be related to homeowners' coverage and a significantly lesser amount to commercial."

Meanwhile, property consultancy CoreLogic reported that over 456,000 homes, valued at nearly $300 billion in reconstruction costs, are at moderate or higher risk within the Los Angeles and Riverside metropolitan areas.
