Los Angeles Area Fires Cause Widespread Devastation and Economic Losses Estimated at USD 150 Billion

Wildfires in Los Angeles have claimed at least 16 lives, displaced thousands, and destroyed over 12,000 structures. The fires, which began last Tuesday, have burned an area larger than San Francisco. Strong Santa Ana winds are expected to continue fueling the blazes. Cal Fire reported that the Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth, and Hurst fires have consumed about 160 square kilometres.

Devastating Fires in Los Angeles Area

Five fatalities were linked to the Palisades Fire along the coast, while 11 deaths occurred due to the Eaton Fire inland, according to the LA County medical examiner's office. At least 16 individuals remain missing, with authorities anticipating this number to increase. Although the fires' cause is still unknown, early estimates suggest they might become the nation's costliest ever. AccuWeather's preliminary estimates place the damage and economic losses between USD 135 billion and USD 150 billion.

Impact on Infrastructure and Evacuations

The fires have threatened densely populated areas like Pacific Palisades and Altadena. Around 150,000 people are under evacuation orders, with over 700 seeking refuge in nine shelters. As of Sunday, Cal Fire reported that the Palisades Fire was 11% contained and the Eaton Fire 27% contained. The Kenneth Fire near West Hills was fully contained by Sunday morning, while the Hurst Fire was 89% contained.

Nearly 70,000 customers across California were without power on Sunday morning, with more than half in Los Angeles County. Sewer, water, and power infrastructure have suffered significant damage. The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for severe fire conditions through Wednesday due to anticipated strong Santa Ana winds.

Community and Cultural Losses

The fires have devastated more than just celebrity homes and landmarks. In Altadena, a haven for Black families escaping discriminatory housing practices has been severely affected. These communities are known for their racial and economic diversity. Several places of worship have also been destroyed, including a mosque, a synagogue, a Catholic parish, and multiple Protestant churches.

Event Cancellations and Postponements

The Critics Choice Awards rescheduled their Sunday ceremonies in Santa Monica to January 26. The Oscars organisation extended the voting window for nominations and postponed next week's announcement. The NFL moved the Los Angeles Rams' playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings to Arizona for Monday night due to the fires. The NBA postponed the Lakers game against the Hornets but plans to resume games in Los Angeles on Monday night.

The California Department of Education announced that 335 schools across several counties were closed as of Wednesday. It remains uncertain how many will remain closed on Monday.

Investigation into Causes

Investigators are still determining what sparked these fires. While lightning is a common cause of wildfires in the US, it was ruled out as there were no reports of lightning in the affected areas. Other potential causes include intentional arson or utility line sparks.

Leadership Challenges Amid Crisis

LA Mayor Karen Bass faces scrutiny over her leadership during this crisis. Allegations of leadership failures have emerged alongside political blame and investigations. Governor Gavin Newsom ordered state officials to investigate why a major reservoir was out of service and some hydrants lacked water. Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley criticised city leadership for inadequate funding for firefighting efforts.

The situation remains dire as thousands remain evacuated or without power while authorities work tirelessly to contain these devastating wildfires.
