London's Luton Airport Reopens After Parking Garage Fire

London's Luton Airport has reopened following a vehicle fire that led to the partial collapse of a newly constructed parking garage. The incident caused significant disruption for thousands of passengers with flight cancellations and delays. Investigations suggest that the blaze originated from a diesel vehicle in the absence of sprinklers in the recently opened structure. No foul play is suspected. Flights have resumed at the airport, which serves as a major hub for budget airlines operating within the UK and Europe.

The Luton Airport in London resumed its operations on Wednesday following a massive fire outbreak that led to the partial collapse of a newly-constructed parking garage. The incident caused significant disruption, affecting tens of thousands of passengers and leading to the cancellation, delay or diversion of dozens of flights. Located about 56 km (35 miles) north of central London, Luton Airport serves as a hub for several budget airlines including easyJet and Ryanair that operate flights across the United Kingdom and Europe.

Luton Airport parking garage fire

The blaze began late Tuesday and is believed to have originated from a diesel vehicle parked in the recently inaugurated parking garage. Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service's Chief Fire Officer Andrew Hopkinson pointed out that the structure did not seem to have any sprinklers installed which could have helped contain the fire. "The fire spread quickly and rapidly," Hopkinson informed reporters while also adding that more than 100 firefighters were deployed at the scene.

Firefighters Injured

Four firefighters along with an airport employee had to be treated for smoke inhalation effects resulting from their efforts to control the blaze. However, authorities confirmed they do not suspect any foul play behind this unfortunate incident.

Passengers Stranded

The sudden closure left many passengers stranded overnight at either the airport or nearby railway stations due to cancelled or delayed flights. One such passenger was Nikodem Lesiak, a university student heading back home to Poland. "When we got here, we found out Luton is burning and everything is closed," he said about his experience.

Eyewitness Account

Russell Taylor, an account director from Kinross in Scotland who had just landed at Luton from Edinburgh when he saw flames rising from an upper level of Terminal 2’s multi-story parking garage where a car was on fire. "A few minutes later, most of the upper floor was alight, car alarms were going off with loud explosions from cars going up in flames," he said while describing the intensity and speed at which the fire spread.

Following this incident, London's Luton Airport is expected to review its safety measures, particularly those related to fire prevention and control. The absence of sprinklers in a newly built structure such as this parking garage raises serious concerns about adherence to safety norms during construction.

In conclusion, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures and effective emergency response systems at public facilities like airports. While it is fortunate that there were no fatalities or severe injuries reported from this event, it underscores the need for regular reviews and updates of safety protocols to ensure the wellbeing of all airport users.
