New Exhibition Unveils the Hidden Contributions of Black Designers to UK's Fashion History
A new exhibition, 'The Missing Thread', opens at Somerset House in London, charting for the first time the significant contributions made by black designers to UK fashion history. It also highlights the racial barriers they encountered within an industry that remains challenging for people of colour.
London, the global fashion capital, is set to unveil a new exhibition that explores the profound yet under-acknowledged impact of Black British culture on UK's fashion and design history. The exhibition titled "The Missing Thread: Untold Stories of Black British Fashion", will be opened at London’s Somerset House this Thursday.
The Unseen Influence

For decades, Black designers have made significant contributions to the UK's vibrant fashion industry. From influencing trends to pioneering unique styles since the 1970s, their work has been instrumental in shaping how we perceive and interpret fashion today. However, despite their immense influence and creativity, these designers often remain unrecognised by the public eye.
A Tribute Long Overdue
"The Missing Thread" aims to rectify this lack of recognition by celebrating these unsung heroes of British fashion. Curators have revealed that plans for such an exhibition had been brewing for some time but it was only after witnessing global outrage over racial injustice following George Floyd's death in 2020, that they finally gained momentum.
Racism: A Persistent Barrier
The exhibition not only highlights the creative genius of Black designers but also sheds light on systemic racism plaguing the industry. Despite their talent and hard work, people of colour still face considerable hurdles when trying to break into this predominantly white-dominated sector.
Fashion within Broader Social Context
Beyond just showcasing designs and trends, "The Missing Thread" also provides a broader social and political context. It delves into issues like anti-immigration sentiment and overt racism prevalent in Britain during the 70s and 80s which greatly affected black artists' experiences in those times.
A Journey through Trials & Tribulations
Harris Elliott, one of the curators of the exhibition, elaborates on this aspect. He says that even if people are familiar with these designers and their work, they often have no idea about the numerous challenges they had to overcome. The exhibition aims to shed light on these struggles and pay tribute to their resilience.
In conclusion, "The Missing Thread: Untold Stories of Black British Fashion" is a significant step towards acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of black designers in UK's fashion history. By shedding light on their trials and triumphs, it not only pays homage to their creativity but also sparks critical conversations about systemic racism within the industry. It serves as a reminder that while fashion is an art form celebrated globally, its true diversity can only be appreciated when we recognise all those who contribute to its richness.
