Lockdown Enacted at Grand Forks Air Force Base After Gunshot Report

On Wednesday, a significant security operation unfolded at the Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota following a report of a gunshot, which led to an extensive door-to-door sweep by AP Security officers. The incident, reported around 1 p.m. near the medical clinic and base exchange, prompted an immediate lockdown as a precautionary measure. Despite the tense situation, no injuries were reported by mid-afternoon, and the search within the facility was actively ongoing.

Air Force Base Lockdown After Gunshot

Grand Forks County Chief Deputy Sheriff Dave Stromberg confirmed that there was no known active threat on the Air Force base and mentioned that base officials had not requested additional assistance. The base's public affairs office also reiterated the absence of injuries and mentioned efforts to prepare an updated statement on the situation.

State Sen. Scott Meyer shared his firsthand experience of the lockdown, noting that he was leaving the base's bowling alley when he observed police activity. Initially mistaking it for a response to a medical incident, Meyer's departure was halted by road barricades and a lockdown announcement over the base's loudspeakers, describing an active shooter situation. The repeated announcements over the speakers created an unsettling atmosphere, according to Meyer.

Meyer recounted spending nearly two hours in his vehicle, waiting as security measures intensified at the base's east gate. Following the final announcement, security personnel conducted thorough searches of vehicles leaving the area, including Meyer's pickup truck, indicating the seriousness with which base security approached the situation.

The Grand Forks Air Force Base is home to the 319th Reconnaissance Wing and supports air and space operations with approximately 2,200 personnel assigned to it. The incident underscores the challenges faced by military installations in maintaining security and responding to potential threats promptly and effectively.
