Libya: Over 10000 Missing, Several Dead After Deadly Storm 'Daniel' Hit Derna

The deadly storm 'Daniel' in eastern Libya that lashed the Derna city with heavy floods has led to the death of thousands of people. However, according to the latest reports by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), more than 10000 people are feared missing.

Ahmed Mismari while addressing a press conference said that the cause of the disaster is overflow of water after the two dams above Derna burst due to the storm Daniel that hit eastern Libya.

At least 15 people were killed by storm Daniel in Greece before the deadly storm affected the eastern zone of Libya. Reportedly. Storm Daniel that hit Libya on Sunday and Monday, destroyed the cities of Benghazi, Susa, Bayda, and al Marj.

The heavy floods caused due to storm led to the destruction of buildings, roads after the water level rose to 3 metres (10 feet).

More than quarter city is vanished by storm Daniel and the floods caused by making it difficult for relief efforts to make it on time.

Speaking to Reuters, Derna resident Saleh al-Obaidi said he had managed to escape the situation with his family, although houses in a valley near the city had collapsed.

"People were asleep and woke up and found their homes surrounded by water," he said to Reuters.

The floods and relief efforts could not be reached on time due to the lack of a single unified government in Libya since the fall of Muammar Gadaffi's government in 2011.

The internationally recognised government under Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh has reportedly promised to send relief material to the east, while announcing three days of mourning for the lives lost.
