Libya Urges Better Jail Conditions for Hannibal Gadhafi After Leaked Cell Photos

Recent leaks of photographs showcasing the living conditions of Hannibal Gadhafi, the son of Libya's late dictator Moammar Gadhafi, in a Lebanese prison have sparked controversy and concern. The images, aired by Al-Jadeed TV, reveal a cramped underground cell devoid of natural light, filled with Gadhafi's personal belongings, a bed, and a small toilet. These revelations have prompted Libyan authorities to call for an improvement in Gadhafi's detention conditions.

Libya Seeks Better Conditions for Gadhafis Son

Hannibal Gadhafi has been detained in Lebanon since 2015 following his abduction from Syria, where he was residing as a political refugee. His capture by Lebanese militants was driven by demands for information on the fate of Moussa al-Sadr, a prominent Lebanese Shiite cleric missing since a 1978 trip to Libya. The case of al-Sadr remains a sensitive issue in Lebanon, with many believing he may still be alive in a Libyan prison.

In January, a Libyan delegation visited Beirut to discuss the case of al-Sadr and explore possibilities for Gadhafi's release, aiming to reactivate a 2014 agreement between Lebanon and Libya. However, the delegation's return to Beirut has not occurred as planned. Amidst these diplomatic efforts, reports surfaced alleging that Gadhafi had received special treatment in detention, including cosmetic surgeries.

Libya's Justice Ministry has issued a statement demanding that Lebanese authorities ensure Gadhafi's rights are respected and that his living conditions are improved to preserve his dignity. The ministry also advocates for Gadhafi's release, highlighting that he was only two years old at the time of al-Sadr's disappearance and did not hold any significant position in Libya as an adult.

The case continues to draw international attention, with Human Rights Watch calling for Gadhafi's release earlier this year. The situation underscores ongoing tensions between Lebanon and Libya over the unresolved disappearance of Moussa al-Sadr and raises questions about the treatment of political prisoners.
