Exploring Top Democrats as Potential Running Mates for Kamala Harris

Vice President Kamala Harris understands the critical nature of choosing the right running mate. As she emerges as the leading candidate to succeed President Joe Biden, attention turns to potential candidates for her ticket.

Andy Beshear: Kentucky's Rising Star

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has solidified his status as a prominent figure in the Democratic Party. He achieved this by defeating Donald Trump-endorsed candidates in a traditionally Republican state. Beshear's disciplined and persistent approach led him to victory over then-Attorney General Daniel Cameron last year. He encourages Democrats to focus on everyday issues like jobs, education, and healthcare.

Beshear, 46, is a supporter of abortion rights. In Kentucky, he has tailored his message to oppose what he calls an extreme ban without exceptions for rape and incest victims. His empathetic leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters earned him widespread praise. Beshear frequently mentions his Christian faith and its influence on his policies.

Beshear's political journey began with his election as state attorney general in 2015. He later unseated Trump-backed Republican Governor Matt Bevin in 2019. Despite facing a GOP-controlled Legislature, Beshear has managed significant achievements, including record economic growth in Kentucky.

Roy Cooper: North Carolina's Veteran Leader

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has won six statewide elections over two decades in a state where Republicans often dominate federal races. Cooper, 67, enjoys strong job-approval ratings, partly due to a booming state economy. He portrays himself as an advocate for public education and abortion rights.

Cooper successfully persuaded GOP legislators to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act last year. However, other efforts have been hindered by a General Assembly with veto-proof majorities. Cooper's political career began in small-town Nash County, where he was a high school quarterback and head of the Young Democrats at the University of North Carolina.

Cooper served 14 years in the General Assembly before becoming Senate majority leader. He was elected attorney general in 2000 and held the position for 16 years. Nationally, he is known for declaring three former Duke University lacrosse players innocent after they were falsely accused of sexual assault.

Mark Kelly: Arizona's Moderate Voice

Arizona Senator Mark Kelly leveraged his career as an astronaut to build a reputation as a moderate in a historically Republican state. In his two campaigns, Kelly received more votes than any other Democrat on the ballot. His first national spotlight came through tragedy when his wife, then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, was shot while meeting constituents.

The shooting left six people dead and made Giffords a national inspiration but ended her promising political career. Kelly and Giffords founded a gun-control advocacy group, with Giffords serving as a powerful surrogate for Kelly's political career. In the Senate, Kelly focuses on national security, military issues, and drought relief in the U.S. West.

Kelly played a key role in crafting the CHIPS and Science Act to boost U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. A Navy test pilot who flew 39 combat missions during the Gulf War, Kelly settled in Tucson with Giffords after retiring from NASA and the Navy.

Josh Shapiro: Pennsylvania's Steadfast Leader

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is halfway through his second year in office after easily winning his last election against a far-right, Trump-endorsed candidate. Shapiro has been a surrogate for Biden and has years of experience targeting Trump in his campaigns.

Shapiro has won three statewide races with disciplined campaigns, offering voters an alternative to Pennsylvania's brash political star, Senator John Fetterman. As governor, Shapiro has become more confident and plain-spoken, recently telling Trump to "quit whining" on MSNBC.

A staunch supporter of abortion rights, Shapiro frequently highlights his court victories against Trump, including challenges to the 2020 election results. He also positions himself as a moderate on energy issues and advocates for bipartisanship in Pennsylvania's divided government.

The selection of Harris' running mate will be crucial for her campaign's success. Each potential candidate brings unique strengths that could appeal to different voter demographics across the country.
