Kurdish Leaders Masoud Barzani and Mazloum Abdi Aim for Unity During Syria's Political Upheaval

The leaders of two previously opposing Kurdish factions recently met in northern Iraq, signalling a potential move towards unity. This meeting comes amid political turmoil in Syria, which has left Kurds in the region facing an uncertain future. Hoshyar Zebari, a senior official from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), described the meeting as a "significant achievement to strengthen Kurdish unity and position" during Syria's transitional phase.

Kurdish Leaders Pursue Unity Amid Syria Crisis

In Irbil, the capital of the semi-autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq, KDP leader Masoud Barzani met with Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). This meeting occurred weeks after insurgent groups swiftly toppled former Syrian President Bashar Assad's government. The situation has been further complicated by Turkiye-backed armed groups intensifying their campaign against Kurdish forces in northeast Syria.

Kurdish Unity and International Support

A senior KDP member, who requested anonymity due to not being authorised to speak to journalists, shared insights into the discussions. The talks between Barzani and Abdi focused on unifying the Kurdish stance within Syria. They also explored ways to separate the SDF from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), a group labelled as a terrorist organisation by Turkiye.

The KDP leader argued that distancing from the PKK could attract broader international support, especially through KDP's connections with both the United States and Turkiye. Barzani emphasised that presenting a united Kurdish front in Syria would allow them to negotiate with the new de facto Syrian government from a position of strength. He suggested that Kurdish political achievements in Iraq, such as constitutional recognition, could serve as a model for Syria's Kurds.

Regional Dynamics and Security Concerns

The SDF, which has controlled northeast Syria for nearly a decade, is currently under attack from the Syrian National Army. This group is an umbrella of militias fighting on behalf of Turkiye, which views the SDF as an extension of the PKK. Meanwhile, talks between politicians from Turkiye's pro-Kurdish party and imprisoned Kurdish leaders are gaining momentum as they seek to end 40 years of conflict between the state and the PKK.

In light of these regional developments, there is increasing pressure on Kurdish factions to put aside their political differences. The security vacuum created by Syria's new leadership attempting to form a national army following Assad's fall raises concerns about a potential resurgence of the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria. Kurdish forces have been instrumental in combating this militant group in both countries.

Efforts Towards Reconciliation

Earlier this week, Barzani's envoy, Hamid Darbandi, met with Abdi in Hasaka, northeastern Syria. The KDP in Iraq maintains friendly relations with Turkiye but has had strained ties with the SDF and other groups aligned with the PKK. Despite these challenges, efforts towards reconciliation are underway.

No official statements were released by either the KDP or SDF regarding this significant meeting. However, it marks an important step towards addressing regional tensions and fostering cooperation among Kurdish groups during this transitional period in Syria.
