Kosovo's President Blames Slow Progress in Investigation of NATO Peacekeeper Attacks

President Vjosa Osmani criticized the slow progress of an investigation into attacks on NATO peacekeepers earlier this year, calling out law enforcement agencies and urging EU officials to avoid favoritism in upcoming talks aimed at improving tense relations between Kosovo and Serbia. The incidents under investigation occurred when Serbs living in northern Kosovo boycotted local elections.

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has criticized investigators for their slow progress in an inquiry into attacks on NATO peacekeepers earlier this year. The incident resulted in several troops and police officers sustaining injuries, some of them severe. In a press conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Thursday, Osmani expressed her concerns over the lackadaisical approach towards bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Allegations Against Serbian Police Officers

NATO Attacks

Osmani stated that the identities of those who attacked NATO on May 29th are well-known to law enforcement agencies. She alleged that some were police officers who had traveled from Serbia. "They have not been suspended from their jobs," she said. "They're not facing any consequences whatsoever." This revelation raises serious questions about the integrity and accountability of law enforcement agencies involved.

Violent Clashes Amidst Local Elections

The violent clashes erupted following a boycott by Serbs residing in northern Kosovo of local elections there. When newly elected ethnic Albanian mayors attempted to take office, they were met with resistance by some Serbs intent on preventing them from doing so. As tensions escalated, Kosovo riot police resorted to firing tear gas to disperse the crowds.

Kosovo's Struggle with Investigation

Kosovo's police force is primarily responsible for investigating these incidents but is struggling due to lack of cooperation from local Serbs. The investigation process appears fraught with difficulties as it grapples with issues such as community mistrust and potential political interference.

A Plea for Impartiality in EU Talks

In addition to addressing the issue of violence against peacekeepers, President Osmani also appealed to European Union officials not to show favoritism during upcoming talks aimed at improving strained relations between Kosovo and Serbia. This plea underscores the importance of impartiality in negotiations, which can significantly influence the outcome and contribute to a fair resolution of longstanding disputes.

In conclusion, Kosovo's President Osmani has drawn attention to two critical issues that need immediate redressal - first, the slow pace of investigation into attacks on NATO peacekeepers and secondly, potential bias in EU talks with Serbia. While it remains to be seen how these matters will unfold, they highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Kosovo as it navigates its path towards peaceful coexistence with its neighbors and stabilization within the region.
