Protests Erupt in Venice as Residents Oppose Jeff Bezos' Wedding Extravaganza

Hundreds of demonstrators filled the streets of Venice on Saturday, voicing their disapproval of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's lavish wedding. The event, which spanned three days, attracted numerous celebrities but also sparked anger among locals. Many Venetians are frustrated by the city's overtourism, high living costs, and climate threats. Protesters carried banners with messages like "Kisses Yes, Bezos No," highlighting their discontent with the billionaire's presence.

Venetians Protest Against Bezos Wedding

The wedding ceremony took place on Friday on the secluded island of San Giorgio, attended by around 200 celebrity guests. The extravagant celebration was seen by critics as an insult to Venice's delicate environment and its residents, who are already burdened by the influx of tourists. "We are here to continue ruining the plans of these rich people, who accumulate money by exploiting many other people … while the conditions of this city remain precarious," said Martina Vergnano, one of the protestors.

Protests Against Extravagance

As the newlyweds prepared for their final party on Saturday evening, protesters from across Italy joined Venetians in expressing their dissatisfaction. They argued that such opulence is inappropriate in a city struggling with environmental and social issues. Flavio Cogo, a Venetian activist, stated, "We want a free Venice, which is finally dedicated to its citizens. Those donations are just a misery and only aimed at clearing Bezos conscience."

The protest organisers claimed success after the wedding party was moved from central Venice to the Arsenale, a former medieval shipyard. This change was seen as a response to public pressure. Despite Bezos donating 1 million euros (USD 1.17 million) to three environmental research organisations working to preserve Venice, many protesters viewed it as an attempt to placate angry residents.

Celebrity Guests and Lavish Celebrations

The wedding attracted a star-studded guest list including Oprah Winfrey, Tom Brady, Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom, Bill Gates, and members of the Kardashian-Jenner family. Ivanka Trump and her family were also present. The couple stayed at the Aman Venice hotel on the Grand Canal, where they posed for photos and interacted with the press.

Lauren Sanchez's wedding wardrobe featured a mermaid-lined gown by Dolce & Gabbana and other outfits inspired by Italian designers like Schiaparelli and Bottega Veneta. A protest slogan mocked this extravagance: "The planet is burning but don't worry, here's the list of the 27 dresses of Lauren Sanchez."

City Administration's Stance

The city administration defended the nuptials as consistent with Venice's tradition as an open city that has welcomed popes, emperors, and visitors for centuries. However, many locals remain unconvinced by this justification. Details of Friday night's exclusive ceremony were kept secret until Sanchez posted a photo on Instagram showing her in a white gown beside Bezos in a tuxedo.

The wedding festivities highlighted both the couple's love and their immense wealth. Critics argue that such displays are out of place in a city facing significant challenges. As protests continue to highlight these issues, Venetians hope for more attention to their concerns.
