Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Criticises Federal Government's Afghan Refugee Policy
Ali Amin Gandapur, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has expressed strong opposition to the federal government's decision to expel Afghan refugees from the province. He believes this action could lead to dire consequences for the refugees. Gandapur emphasised his commitment to following his provincial government's policies and traditions on this matter.

Gandapur criticised the forced deportation of Afghan refugees, describing it as an affront to humanity. He attributed the worsening situation of these refugees to past government policies. Instead of deporting them, he suggested granting them Pakistani citizenship. His attempts to initiate dialogue on this issue have been met with ridicule and criticism.
Economic Impact and Federal Relations
The Chief Minister highlighted economic concerns related to the closure of the Torkham border with Afghanistan. He stated that this closure results in a monthly loss of PKR 1 billion, affecting trade negatively. Gandapur urged the federal government to abandon ineffective policies to foster regional progress.
Gandapur also discussed his strained relationship with the federal government. As a leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, he feels sidelined in meetings and remains a lone voice advocating for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's rights. He expressed frustration over being excluded from important discussions.
Efforts for Dialogue
The Chief Minister mentioned sending Terms of Reference (TORs) to the Foreign and Interior ministries concerning negotiations with Afghanistan. However, he has yet to receive any response. This lack of communication has been a source of frustration for him as he seeks a resolution.
Gandapur's stance reflects a broader concern for human rights and economic stability in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. His call for granting citizenship to Afghan refugees highlights a compassionate approach towards resolving their plight while addressing regional economic challenges.
His efforts underscore the need for constructive dialogue between provincial and federal authorities. By advocating for policy changes, Gandapur aims to ensure both humanitarian considerations and economic growth are prioritised in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
