KFC Employee Fatally Shot During Anti-Israel Protest in Pakistan's Sheikhupura

An employee of the American fast-food chain KFC was killed during an attack on the restaurant by a radical Islamist group in Punjab province, according to police. The incident occurred in Sheikhupura, approximately 50 kilometres from Lahore. The attack took place during an anti-Israel protest organised by Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) activists.

According to authorities, a large group of TLP members targeted the KFC outlet on Sheikhupura Road early on Tuesday. During the assault, the attackers opened fire on the staff, resulting in the death of one employee while others fled for safety. The victim has been identified as Asif Nawaz, reportedly in his 40s.

Ongoing Investigations and Arrests

Police reported that by the time they arrived at the scene, the attackers had already escaped. However, over three dozen suspects have been detained for further investigation. This incident follows a similar attack by TLP activists on a KFC restaurant in Rawalpindi city just a day earlier, where they vandalised the premises.

Last week, TLP members also targeted KFC outlets in Karachi and Lahore, setting parts of them ablaze. In response to these attacks, Punjab police have arrested 17 TLP members. Despite these actions, the Pakistani government and security agencies seem unable to effectively counter the TLP's assaults on international food chains under religious pretexts.

The recent surge in attacks highlights ongoing tensions and challenges faced by authorities in managing extremist activities targeting foreign businesses. The situation remains tense as investigations continue and more arrests are anticipated.
