Kenyan Public Hospital Doctors Sign Deal to End National Strike

Kenya's public hospital doctors have officially ended their national strike, which began in mid-March, causing significant disruptions to healthcare services across the country. The strike was called off following the signing of a return to work agreement with the government on Wednesday. This development promises to bring much-needed relief to millions of Kenyans who rely on public hospitals for healthcare services.

Doctors End Strike in Kenya

Davji Atellah, the secretary general of Kenya's public hospital doctors' union, announced the agreement, expressing trust in the government's commitment to address the labour issues that led to the strike. These issues include poor remuneration and inadequate working conditions for doctors. The resolution came after a labour court issued an ultimatum on Tuesday, giving both parties 48 hours to reach an agreement or have the matter resolved by the court.

Health Minister Susan Nakhumicha acknowledged the doctors' negotiation skills, stating that they had "put up quite a fight." The strike's conclusion marks an end to a period of uncertainty and difficulty for patients who were left in limbo as public hospitals struggled to cope with the absence of medical staff. During the strike, some hospitals resorted to hiring temporary doctors to provide emergency services.

The 2017 precedent, where doctors at Kenya's public hospitals staged a 100-day strike—the longest in the country's history—over similar issues, underscores the ongoing challenges within Kenya's healthcare system. These include demands for better wages and improvements to the country's deteriorating public health facilities.

Adding to the nation's challenges, Kenya is currently grappling with the devastating effects of flooding that has impacted 235,000 people since mid-March, coinciding with the start of the rainy season. This natural disaster has further strained the country's healthcare resources, making the resolution of the doctors' strike even more critical.

The agreement between Kenya's public hospital doctors and the government marks a significant step towards improving healthcare services in the country. As both parties work towards implementing the agreed-upon terms, it is hoped that this will lead to lasting improvements in working conditions for doctors and healthcare services for Kenyans nationwide.
