Tragic Helicopter Crash Claims Life of Kenya's Military Chief, Gen Ogolla

In a tragic incident that has gripped the nation, Kenya's military chief, Gen. Francis Ogolla, was confirmed dead following a helicopter crash in the western part of the country. President William Ruto made the somber announcement on Thursday and has since declared three days of national mourning in honor of Gen. Ogolla and the other victims of the crash.

The helicopter, which was carrying 11 individuals including Gen. Ogolla, met with disaster on Thursday, crashing and subsequently catching fire in a remote locale near the Uganda border. The president confirmed that nine people aboard perished in the accident. The cause of the crash remains undetermined at this stage.

Gen. Ogolla, aged 61, was conducting a tour of Kenya's northern region—a zone that has been plagued by frequent attacks from local bandits—at the time of the accident. His leadership role as Kenya's Chief of Defense Forces began in April of the previous year, succeeding Gen. Robert Kibochi upon his retirement.

Controversy had shadowed Ogolla even before his appointment as Chief of Defense Forces. He was implicated by the chairperson of the country's electoral commission in an alleged attempt by a national security council delegation to sway the results of the 2022 general election against President Ruto. Despite these allegations, Ruto later clarified that after speaking with Gen. Ogolla prior to his appointment, he found him to be the most qualified candidate for the position.

Gen. Ogolla's military career spanned over four decades, marking him as a distinguished member of Kenya's defense forces. His academic credentials were equally impressive, with degrees from École Militaire de Paris, National Defence College of Kenya, Egerton University, and the University of Nairobi.

He leaves behind his wife Aileen, two children, and a grandson. The nation now mourns the loss of a prominent military figure whose career was both celebrated and contentious.
