Kenya Floods Claim 70 Lives, Government Allocates Emergency Relief Funds

Recent weeks have seen Kenya grappling with severe weather conditions, resulting in devastating floods across various parts of the country. The government spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, confirmed on Friday that the death toll has reached 70 since mid-March, a significant increase from earlier reports. This surge in fatalities underscores the harsh impact of the ongoing heavy rains and flooding, particularly in Nairobi, and the western and central regions of Kenya.

70 Dead in Kenya Floods; Relief Funds Allocated

In response to the crisis, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced that the government has allocated 4 billion Kenya shillings (approximately USD 29 million) towards emergency relief efforts. The specifics of how these funds will be utilized remain undisclosed. The flooding has had a profound effect on the population, with over 130,000 individuals currently affected. Thousands of homes have been either completely washed away or inundated by floodwaters. Additionally, the education sector has taken a hit, with 64 public schools in Nairobi forced to close due to flooding. The infrastructure has not been spared either; numerous roads and bridges have suffered damage or complete destruction.

Rescue Operations and Warnings

Amidst these challenges, rescue operations are underway. A tragic incident was reported in Makueni county, where a lorry carrying passengers was swept off a submerged bridge. Citizen TV reported that five bodies were retrieved from a river on Friday, while another 11 individuals were rescued from the same incident. The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory for the upcoming weekend, urging residents to exercise caution. This warning is part of broader efforts to mitigate further loss and damage as the country braces for more rain.

Regional Impact

The flooding crisis is not confined to Kenya alone; neighboring East African countries are also facing similar challenges. Tanzania has reported a death toll of 155 due to flooding, while Burundi has seen over 200,000 people affected by the adverse weather conditions. These figures highlight the widespread nature of the crisis affecting the East African region.

The situation in Kenya and its neighboring countries calls for immediate action and support to manage the impacts of these severe weather events. With emergency funds allocated and rescue operations ongoing, the focus remains on safeguarding lives and restoring normalcy in the affected areas. The heavy rainfall advisory issued serves as a critical reminder for residents to stay vigilant as the region navigates through this challenging period.
